Project Name: Connection Design for Proposed Distillery at Thompsons Dock House, Belfast
Client: Titanic Distillers
Steel Fabricator: M. Hasson & Sons

Design of connections for the steel frame in the new distillery at Titanic Pump House. Working in collaboration with M. Hasson & Sons, logistical challenges were overcome to install the steel frame within the 82-foot-long x 30-foot-wide x 30-foot-deep basement without interfering with the historical listed pump house equipment below.

Mass concrete padstones were formed with holding bolts cast into place, which meant that the ends of beams needed to be offered over the projecting bolts. The solution was to splice the lower deck beams into three portions, with the end portions offered over the fixed bolts, and then the central portion lowered into place to complete the span. Erection sequences were considered at all stages, and in some instances, construction stage loads represented the critical design case.
